Argon-Helium Cryoablation (Cryosurgery)

Argon-Helium Cryoablation (Cryosurgery) is a modern, highly precise, and gentle method for treating oncological diseases. The technology is based on "freezing" the tumor to extremely low temperatures, leading to its complete destruction without the need for traditional surgical incisions.

The method is officially approved by international regulatory bodies (including the FDA in the US) and has been successfully used in leading oncology centers worldwide for more than 20 years.

How the method works: a dual blow to the tumor

The procedure is based on using two gases — argon and helium, which are delivered to the tip of an ultra-thin needle (cryoprobe).

  1. Instant freezing (Argon)

In just 15 seconds, the temperature at the tip of the needle drops to minus 140 °C…170 °C. Ice crystals form inside the cancer cells, literally tearing them apart from within. Simultaneously, blood flow in the tumor's small vessels is shut off, depriving it of nourishment and oxygen.

  2. Rapid thawing (Helium)

Then argon is replaced by helium, which rapidly heats the tissue to +20 °C…+40 °C. The sharp temperature differential completely destroys the remaining affected cells.

The "freezing–thawing" cycle must be repeated at least twice per procedure, guaranteeing total destruction of the tumor tissue.

3 key efficacy factors

  • Direct cell destruction. Ice crystals physically destroy the structure of the tumor.

  • Blood supply occlusion. Blockage of the tumor's blood vessels prevents its further growth.

  • "Triggering" intrinsic immunity (Cryoimmune response). The destroyed tumor tissue remains in the body and becomes a "target" for the immune system. The body recognizes cancer proteins and begins to independently attack unfrozen areas and distant metastases.

How is the procedure performed?

Argon-helium cryoablation belongs to minimally invasive (bloodless) interventions. In most cases, it is performed under general anesthesia via a percutaneous approach.

  • CT or Ultrasound-guided precision. Through a small skin puncture, the doctor inserts a thin needle (only 2–4 mm in diameter) directly into the center of the tumor. The entire process is displayed on the monitor in real time.

  • Safety for healthy tissues. Cooling occurs strictly at the very tip of the cryoprobe. The doctor forms an "ice ball" that completely covers the tumor and 5–10 mm of adjacent tissue to prevent recurrence, without damaging healthy organs along the insertion pathway.

  • Computer control. Speed, temperature, and freezing boundaries are regulated by high-precision equipment.

Main advantages of cryoablation for the patient

  • No incisions or scars. The procedure is performed through a pinpoint puncture of the probe-knife, eliminating heavy blood loss and severe pain.

  • Fast recovery. Patients return to normal life significantly faster than after traditional open surgery.

  • Organ preservation. The method allows the removal of tumors located in hard-to-reach areas or near major blood vessels where classical surgery is powerless.

  • Minimal side effects. Unlike radiation therapy and chemotherapy, cold exposure does not exert a general toxic load on the body.

  • Enhancement of other methods' effects. Cryoablation increases the tumor's sensitivity to subsequent chemotherapy or radiation therapy, allowing for reduced dosages.

  • Re-treatability. The procedure can be performed repeatedly if new foci appear.

In which diseases is cryoablation applied?

The method is effective in treating virtually any solid (dense) tumors — both primary and metastatic:

  • Liver and pancreatic cancer

  • Lung cancer

  • Kidney and prostate cancer

  • Breast cancer

  • Ovarian, uterine, and vaginal cancer

  • Head and neck tumors, laryngeal cancer

  • Osteosarcoma (bone cancer) and soft tissue sarcomas

  • Melanoma

Cryoablation can be used as a standalone treatment method or as part of combination therapy. Schedule a consultation to find out if this method is suitable for your specific case.
